WEEKLY ACTIVITIES 

A full slate of reoccurring activities are planned weekly at the Southwood Community Center for senior adults. Refer to the activities calendar below for complete details. Activities are free to those with a membership.

OPEN COMPUTER LAB
Utilize the computer lab whenever a computer class is not in session.

BEGINNING LINE DANCE WORKSHOP
Workshop is designed to teach beginners the steps and terminology of line dancing.

Ages 55+ • Membership • Mon. • Weekly • 10:30-11:30 a.m.

SIT & FIT
A gentle exercise that features fat-burning aerobics and weight lifting while using a chair for support.

Ages 55+ • Membership • Mon./Tue./Thu./Fri. • Weekly • 12-1 p.m.

FOREVERSIZE
This class is specifically designed to encourage individuals to adopt healthy lifestyle practices. We provide helpful tips on nutrition and exercise during meetings.

SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The committee’s purpose is to address the needs of older adults living in College Station and offers program and activity suggestions to the College Station Parks and Recreation Department. Members must be 55+ and current residents of College Station. Visitors are welcome to attend meetings.

CLASSIC COUNTRY AND BLUEGRASS JAM SESSION
All musicians, regardless of experience level, are welcome to join. Country and bluegrass music fans are also encouraged to attend.

GAME NIGHT
Enjoy an evening of dominoes, cornhole, cards, board games and table tennis.

Join us to get your heart rate up by walking with an instructor in a fun environment. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace.

HAND & FOOT CANASTA
All levels are invited learn how to play this fun card game.

Looking for a fun way to exercise? Try line dancing! Dance to the hottest tunes and enjoy a low-impact, aerobic workout.

Become a pro at this classic domino game during these weekly educational sessions.

Interested in learning more about the world of computers and technology? Join us the first Wednesday of each month. Registration is not required.

42 DOMINOES
42 is often referred to as the "National Game of Texas." Beginner and experienced players are welcome.

MAH JONGG
Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and calculation. This beginner’s class will teach the basics of the game.

Enjoy newly released films and popcorn with friends.

SATURDAY SENIOR SOCIAL

NATIONAL ISSUES FORUM: “LAND OF PLENTY” • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
National Issues Forum (NIF) encourages public deliberation around national issues of concern. Join us for this thought provoking special presentation on the “Land of Plenty. BEGINNER MIXED MARTIAL ARTS & SELF DEFENSE FOR SENIORS
This beginner’s class focuses on Taekwondo and Jujitsu principles. Wear loose clothing, tennis shoes or water shoes. No class on Nov. 23.

LUNCH & LEARN • REGISTRATION REQUIRED

STORYTELLING • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Learn how to share memories and tell tales of fantasy/intrigue. Oral storytelling is a valuable tool to celebrate our individuality as well as to teach, inspire, console and connect with others. Join Nancy S. Self, Ph.D. in this miniseries as she educates participants on the importance of storytelling in families for preserving culture and heritage. Space is limited. EXPLORING HISTORY LUNCHEONS • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
The College Station Historic Preservation Committee and the College Station Parks and Recreation Department present monthly lectures on the history of our community. The luncheons are held at Southwood Community Center located at 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. A reservation is necessary for lunch and the cost is $7 per plate. GROW YOUR OWN SALAD BOWL • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Dr. Sarah Gatson and the service-learning research team from Texas A&M Sociology’s Urban Re-Rural project will guide us in this do-it-yourself project. They will demonstrate how to grow two greens, a root vegetable and a legume in one container. Space is limited. Register by calling 979.764.6351 or email kpeterson@cstx.gov.

BEGINNING TAP DANCE
All levels are invited to learn basic tap dance steps and terminology with Instructor Sue Engbrock. Tap shoes are recommended but not required.

RAINWATER HARVESTING • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Dr. Sarah Gatson and the service-learning research team from Texas A&M Sociology’s Urban Re-Rural project will demonstrate how to build your own rainwater harvesting system by using feed tubs and simple household items. CHRONIC PAIN SELF-MANAGEMENT • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Self-management workshops complement clinical care and are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Topics include fatigue management, pacing and planning activity, getting a good night’s sleep, better breathing and more. Space is limited. HOUSTON DAY TRIP TO NUTCRACKER MARKET • REGISTRATION REQUIRED
The Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market is a one-stop, pop-up shop featuring more than 280 merchants offering unique items for everyone, such as: home décor, food, clothing, toys, novelties, ornaments, pottery, pewter, accessories and much more.
